Interview Tips: What to Wear

As I was choosing my outfit for our composite pictures tomorrow, I was thinking about how much I was dreading putting on that suit (or at least the jacket). I seriously wish something else was acceptable for us to wear to an interview, but alas - at least for now - a suit is the expected attire. Before I went through recruitment, there was a fashion show for what to wear and what not to wear for reach round - I really think this should be implemented into law school as well. There are so many people who have never had to go to an interview before, or at least not an interview for a professional job. That being said, in addition to a suit there are a few more rules that should generally be followed when you're dressing for an interview - especially in the legal field.

1. Dark Neutral Suit

For an interview, a dark suit is really your best option. Dark neutrals are more formal and more appropriate in this setting. I have a navy suit, as well as a gray suit that I can wear. Black is acceptable as well, but can come off as a little too harsh sometimes, so sticking to something more like charcoal or navy is usually a better option.  I'll be honest, and I think most girls would agree, I hate wearing suits and feel like I don't look my best because it's not what I'm comfortable in. However, for an interview, especially in the legal field, suits are expected and it's a risky game to play not to wear a suit.

2. A Relatively Plain Blouse

There is some debate about this, but I have always been told, and personally believe that sticking to solid shirts are the best way to go. That being said, I have worn a striped oxford with my suit - and ended up getting that job - so rules are meant to be broken. The point here is really that you do not want to walk in to an interview in a bright neon shirt or a floral shirt. I get that for some of you it might seem like  you're having to hold back your personal style, and you might be, but again, this is the expectation and there are other ways to can shine without letting your appearance be the only thing they remember.

3. Natural Make Up

Soft, natural, and neutral. That really should be the outlook on your entire look - and the same still applies to makeup. Ideally, a little mascara and some lip color is enough. If you truly feel like you want to wear foundation to cover up some blemishes, make sure that it matches your skin and still looks natural, and the same goes for any eyeshadow and blush. You don't want to look like you're going to the bars, you want to look like someone is going to sit for the bar. (Excuse the poor attempt at a joke, I couldn't help it!)

4. Minimal Jewelry

In case you haven't heard, there is a "5 piece rule" when it comes to jewelry. It's really pretty self explanatory, you should wear no more than 5 pieces of jewelry when you go for an interview - there is some debate as to wether earrings count as one or two! This is also not the time to pull out your statement necklaces or giant dangle earrings. Keep it simple, pearls or other studs, a watch - only if you can keep yourself from looking at it, and perhaps an understated necklace. Similar to the other things listed above, you don't want them to remember you for what you looked like or what you wore, you want them to remember you for what you said and what you did.

5. Heels. Shoes You Can Walk In

I feel 100x better when I am in heels, it's like I am on top of the world and can do anything I want. Not everyone feels this way, and not everyone has decided its worth the pain. However, pain aside, you need to make sure that you can walk in the shoes you decide to wear. Sometimes it might not matter because you think you just have to walk in and walk out and the rest of the time you're sitting down. But keep in mind that occasionally you'll be meeting with more than one person in the office and you might be the one moving around, or they might want to give you a tour of the office. When this happens you don't want to look like Bambi learning to walk. So, I would highly recommend heels, but if you are going to make a fool of yourself, wear flats, or hey - try out some nice wedges - I don't mean the kind with a hemp or cork heel, but the kind that look just like heels, except they have a wedge instead, something like this. The last thing you want to do is fall on your face.

Do you have an interview coming up? If so, good luck!! What else would you add to this list?

Have a Great Day, Y'all!
xoxo

Wear-to-Work Wednesday

As it has gotten drastically colder here lately, I've (unfortunately) had to result to wearing pants to work more often than I would prefer. I don't think there is anything wrong with pants, but as I've expressed before, I would much rather wear a dress. However, I am starting to get a little tired of having to wear tights and boots every. single. day. because it is so cold!

These are a few looks I really love to wear with pants. First is a simple cardigan and top paired with neutral pants. Cardigans are always a great option because you have the ability to take it off at any point in the day if your office tends to run hot. For that reason, I always make sure to wear an office appropriate shirt underneath, i.e. no camisoles. Pants also can give you the option of wearing flats or heels (or wedges) depending on the hem of the pant and what you are comfortable with.

In addition to easily pairing a cardigan and top with pants, I also love the look of colored pants and a neutral(ish) sweater. These pants, although "colored", I think would still be office appropriate because they are still a darker, classic color.

How do you deal with colder temperatures when you have to still dress for the office?

Wear-to-Work Wednesday

A lot of people don't seem to like dressing up, but I LOVE it. Sometimes I wish I was going to be one of those wives that just had to go to a bunch of really fancy parties with her husband and got to wear really beautiful dresses all the time. Buttttt 'tis not the case, so here I am getting to "dress up" when I go to work, which is also just fine with me :)

I just got a black dress similar to the one below and I've already worn it twice. I know everyone needs that LBD, but this is more of a work friendly LBD, rather than a hot date LBD - which this can also be as well.
A black dress is also a really great way to get to wear all of your statement necklaces and colorful accessories. As someone who has a closet full of color, I generally struggle with finding new ways to wear my bright accessories, but having a couple of neutral dresses really helps me out in that respect.

While I do really like dressing up, I also like to be comfortable sitting at a desk all (most of) the day. I've already talked about my love of "shirt dresses" here, but when you throw flannel into the mix, it is a game changer. Just make sure that if you choose to go that route you find a dress similar to the one below that still has some structure and detailing that makes it clear it isn't just a fashionable sleep-shirt. Plus, the flannel can give you some warmth without being too hot during some of those warmer southern fall days.

What are some of your favorite things to wear to work and still stay comfortable?

Wear-to-Work Wednesday

As I mentioned in this post, I have my ups and downs with pencil skirts, but I am currently in the mood for them on a pretty regular basis. It is just so easy to pair a quick shell with and heels and look very put together. I have been working on taking the clothes I have (which is way too many) and rearranging them to achieve new looks and this is one of my recent favorites. Seems like an obvious go-to, but if you are like me and always paired a pencil skirt with an oxford then you may have been ignoring this great combination for too long!

Despite being back on the pencil-skirt-bandwagon, I am very much a dresses kind of girl. I think it mostly has to do with my level of laziness. Don't get me wrong, I always prefer to look put together, but I would like to do so with the minimum level of effort. Enter: dresses. But seriously, it is SO much easier to throw on a dress than to find a skirt, and a shirt and maybe even a cardigan that are all clean and all match. Whereas a dress is just one piece and it is ready. to. go.

The weather here has remained so unpredictable that I've worn three different weights of jackets and I still can't seen to get comfortable. What have you been wearing this week?

Wear-to-Work Wednesday

If I haven't mentioned it already, y'all should know that I love shirt dresses. Love, as in I have no fewer than eight or ten of them. I just think they are so comfortable and versatile and can be dressed up or down. Because I have so many, it isn't uncommon to wear a couple in one week. I have two that are similar to the ones below. I like having navy as an option because it is neutral and let's me play with fun jewelry, but I also love to have colored options like the pink one to brighten up a Monday.

Now that the weather is cooling down, I pretty much always wear boots with these dresses, but in the summer and on warmer fall days they also look great with the sleeves rolled up and paired with flats.

Wear-to-Work Wednesday

I used to feel like I struggled on a daily basis with what I wanted to wear to work and/or school. I've recently started planning my outfits a few weeks out - sounds crazy, I know - and it has made so much of a difference.
I work in an office with two men, so it took me a while to figure out how to dress on the same "level" as a female. I'm starting a new series called "Wear-to-Work Wednesday" with a few of the outfits (or similar ones) that I wore to work that week. I'll do my best to link up the following items - please forgive me if I can't find the link.

I tend to have a love/hate relationship with pencil skirts, but right now I am totally in love.  A lot of my dresses are not geared towards cooler weather, and are less practical right now. However, a pencil skirt is so easy to pair with a long-sleeve shirt, an oxford, or a sweater and allow me to be totally comfortable all day.

A black dress is also a great staple to have. I love one like this that is modest enough to wear without a cardigan if it is warm outside (or even in the office).

What are some of your go-to items?

Have a Great Day, Y'all!
